PRELUDE  (A Time for Quiet Reflection)

*INTROIT #391 God, Reveal Your Presence, verse 1

One:      We come from days of worry and confusion;

All:        from separation and mixed messages,

and what feels to be a loss of courtesy and decency

              and mutual respect.

One:      And now, we gather here in person and in Spirit,

and in love for one another, near and far,

All:        to know again the Source and Soul of life,

and celebrate the promise that is ours and for the world.

One:      Together with each other in our faith

All:        we worship God!

*HYMN #339 When Morning Gilds the Skies, verses 1-3

(after Wendy MacLean, Christ U.C., Lyn, Ontario)

Loving God, in the stories of scripture, we are reminded of the longing of our forbearers for a world of justice, a world where those in poverty are fed, where strangers are received with open arms.  Still today your children thirst for righteousness; we hunger for the strength of heart to honour every people, and seek your guidance and your healing and your wisdom.  Gracious Saviour, fill us and fulfill us in your calling to confront the forces that give rise to poverty and hatred, to greed and hardened hearts and anger, and help us build with you a world where all of us contribute to the life and the well-being of each other, and our hunger disappears.  We pray in Jesus’ name.  Amen.

Responsive Reading: 1 Thessalonians 1:1-10 (The Message)

Giving thanks for the community of faith

One:      I, says Paul, together here with Silas and Timothy, send greetings to the church at Thessalonica - Christians                     assembled by God the Father and by the Master,     Jesus Christ.  God’s amazing grace be with you!  God’s                           robust peace!

All:        Paul, with his helpers, says to us:  Every time we think of you, we thank God for you.  Day and night you’re in                   our prayers as we call to mind your work of faith, your labour of love, and your patience of hope in following                   our Master, Christ Jesus, before God our Father.  It is clear to us, friends, that God not only loves you

very much but that God’s hand has been placed on you for something special.

One:     When the Message we preached came to you, it wasn’t just words.  Something happened in you.

The Holy Spirit put steel in your convictions.  You paid careful attention to the way we lived among you, and                     determined to live that way yourselves.  In imitating us, you imitated the Master.

All:        Although great trouble accompanied the Word, says Paul, you were able to take great joy from the Holy Spirit! -               taking the trouble with the joy, the joy with the trouble.

One:      Do you know that, all over the provinces of both Macedonia and Achaia, believers look up to you?

The word has gotten around.  Your lives are echoing the Master’s Word, not only in the provinces but

all over the place.  The news of  your faith in God is out.  We don’t even have to say anything anymore -

              you’re the message!

All:        Paul and his helpers say to us:  People come up and tell us how you received us with open arms, how you                            deserted the dead idols of your old life so you could embrace and serve God, the true God.

They marvel at how expectantly you await the arrival of the Son, whom God raised from the dead -

Jesus, who rescued us from certain doom.

Sung Response:                            #249

    Rejoice in the Lord always

and again I say rejoice! (clap, clap)

    Rejoice in the Lord always

and again I say rejoice! (clap, clap)

Rejoice, rejoice, and again I say rejoice! (clap, clap)

Rejoice, rejoice, and again I say rejoice! (clap, clap)

*Offertory Prayer:

(after Robin Wardlaw, Glen Rhodes United, Toronto)

We remember with thanks all the works of your hands, O God.  We remember with thanks all the works of others:  those who grow our food and those of us who grow food, those who seek for peace and justice in the world, those who teach and organize, heal and lead.  Accept these gifts, and us, for the work of your realm, we pray, in the name of Jesus the Christ, our partner, guide, and friend.  Amen.
