                     Creation Time

(Creation Time writing group, Church of Scotland)

We meet in the name of God:

whose speech began the story of life,

whose words brought form into being,

and who ordered Creation in harmony and goodness.

We meet in the purpose of Jesus:

whose life was the speech of God,

whose words show the shape of his kingdom,

and who draws those who hear into its unfolding story.

We meet in the power of the Spirit:

whose breath tamed the primordial chaos,

whose tongue shapes the words of change,

and who energizes the ones who give them voice.

We meet in the name of the Triune God:

the Source, the Sharer, and the Shaper,

who was, and is, and will be,

as long as the Story of Love is told.

HYMN #268 Bring Many Names

(after Creation Time writing group, Church of Scotland)

God  -  Father, Son, Holy Spirit  -  Source, Sharer, Shaper  -   though you have many names, your story moves                     constantly and consistently towards a world in which all can flourish as you intended.  Help us to grow in clear-               sightedness of how our own names or narratives can hinder our understandings of your love and purpose,

and guide us in the ways of life for all, that we may join more fully in the story of your kingdom.

This we pray in Jesus’ name, who taught us, when we pray, to say:

Our Father, who art in heaven ..

Prayer for Illumination:

Gracious Holy Spirit, we pray you guide us in the strong assurance of your presence and your love, that we might hear     the Gospel promise that is ours, and live it well.  We pray in Jesus’ name.  Amen.

First Reading:  Exodus 17:1-16 (Revised Standard Version)

    Stories of God’s presence

Responsive Reading: Based on Philippians 2:1-13 (NRSV)

Finding grace in finding each other

    The apostle Paul writes:

If then there is any encouragement in Christ, any consolation from love,

any sharing in the Spirit, any compassion and sympathy,

    make my joy complete:

be of the same mind, having the same love,

being in full accord and of one mind.

Do nothing from selfish ambition or conceit, but in humility

regard others as better than yourselves.

We each can look not to our own interests,

but to the interests of others.

Let the same mind be in you that you have in Christ Jesus,

who, though he was in the form of God,

did not regard equality with God

    as something to be exploited,

    but emptied himself,

taking the form of a servant,

    being born in human likeness.

And being found in human form,

    he humbled himself

and became obedient to the point of death—

    even death on a cross.

Therefore God also highly exalted him

    and gave him the name

    that is above every name,

so that at the name of Jesus

    every knee should bend,

in heaven and on earth and under the earth,

    and every tongue should confess

    that Jesus Christ is Lord,

to the glory of God the Father.

    Therefore, my beloved, says Paul,

just as you have always obeyed me, not only in my presence,

but much more now in my absence,

    work out your own salvation with fear and trembling;

for it is God who is at work in us,

enabling us both to will and to work for his good pleasure.

Sung Response:     #335, verse 1 (Tune: The Hymnary #365)

At the name of Jesus every knee shall bow,

    every tongue confess him King of glory now;

tis our God's great pleasure we should call him Lord,

who from the beginning was the mighty Word.

At the name of Jesus every knee shall bow,

every tongue confess him King of glory now!

HYMN #651 Guide Me, O Thou Great Jehovah

(Creation Time writing group, Church of Scotland)

May the God whose names are many

    but whose nature is constant,

the One whose story is complex,

    but whose purpose is clear,

enable us to deepen in love,

    develop in understanding,

    and be determined in action
